How to play Ghost Word Game online
- Choose Study challenges or Full CPU match. Read the starting fragment and whose turn it is.
- Select one letter tile, then press Append letter, or type a letter and press Enter. Keep the fragment as a prefix without completing a listed word of four or more letters.
- Watch the rival's reply and plan another safe continuation. Open Words & score to explore the accepted dictionary.
- Make the rival lose to finish a study, or complete full rounds until one player collects five GHOST letters. Undo and limited hints are available for study practice.
Controls
Click or tap a letter tile, then Append letter. On a keyboard, type A–Z and press Enter. Arrows move focus, Space selects, and Escape or Backspace clears a choice. Ctrl+Z undoes a study turn. Words & score opens the dictionary in a separate panel. A cancelled or dragged touch does not commit a letter.
A tip before you start
Do not rely only on the length of one word you have in mind. A rival may steer the fragment toward another ending. Explore the accepted continuations and find a letter that leaves the opponent without a safe answer.
A Ghost word game with a clear rule set
This is a two-player, append-only teaching version. Each turn adds exactly one letter to the end of the current fragment. Completing a listed word of four or more letters loses the round. So does creating a fragment that no listed word begins with. The checks happen automatically: this table has no bluffing or Challenge button. You cannot put a letter at the front, insert it in the middle, swap letters or shuffle the fragment.
Short words and longer continuations
The four-letter minimum matters. CAT does not end a round, because it has only three letters. CARP does, provided those letters were reached legally. A completed word still loses when it begins a longer word: play stops at RAIN, before anyone can continue to RAINBOW. Knowing a long continuation will not rescue an already completed word.
Know which words count
The game uses a fixed list of 78,419 entries derived from the licensed English Speller Database US word list. It accepts the source's lowercase A–Z entries with lengths from four through eighteen letters. The filter leaves out capitalized-only entries, apostrophes, hyphens, numbers and non-ASCII characters. This is the dictionary for this particular table, not a promise to accept every English word or the same words as another Ghost game. Some entries are uncommon.
Explore the dictionary while you play
Open Words & score to search by the beginning of a word. The panel initially uses your current fragment, shows the number of matching entries, and lets you move through pages of results. Clear the search to browse the full list. Consulting it is allowed in both modes. Seeing several continuations can help you understand why a letter works, but you still need to account for whose turn will complete the word.
Complete matches against the computer
In Full CPU match, each round starts with an empty fragment. Every round loss adds the next letter of G-H-O-S-T to that player's score. Five losses end the match. The starting player alternates between rounds at this table; press Next round when you are ready. The computer plays a winning continuation whenever one exists in this dictionary. After a mistake, your position may have no forced win. Normal matches do not allow Undo.
Nineteen progressive prefix studies
Study challenges begin at prepared, legal fragments with your turn. Every starting position has a route that wins against all replies, though an incorrect choice can give that advantage away. Later studies contain more consequential decisions and require longer plans. The progression reaches three layers of necessary strategic choices. A study is complete only when the rival actually loses the round; selecting one correct opening letter is not enough.
Learn from a wrong turn
A failed study can be undone. Undo restores your preceding choice together with the rival's reply, so you can try a different continuation. Each study allows two successful hints, and Undo does not refund them. A hint distinguishes a winning choice from a move that merely delays an unavoidable loss. Restart repeats the current starting position after confirmation. Completed studies unlock the next challenge, and progress is stored locally when browser storage is available.
Why strategy depends on the word list
Ghost is about both vocabulary and alternating turns. A line that wins under one dictionary can lose when another adds a shorter word or a new branch. There is no universal winning first letter for every version. Ghost Word Game states its dictionary rules and keeps the searchable list beside the game so that you can examine the actual possibilities. The studies use the same list and completion rules as full matches.
Frequently asked questions
Does a three-letter word lose the round?
No. This version requires at least four letters for a completed word to lose. The fragment must still begin a listed longer word.
Can I add a letter at the front?
No. Ghost Word Game uses ordinary append-to-the-end play. Front additions, insertion, swaps and shuffle belong to other variants.
Can I challenge the computer's word?
There is no challenge phase here. The fixed dictionary checks every move immediately, and Words & score lets you inspect accepted entries.
Can I always beat the computer?
Each study begins with a forced win, but later mistakes can lose it. Full matches can reach positions with no winning continuation against perfect play. The result depends on this exact word list.
What happens when storage is unavailable?
You can continue playing in the current session. The game reports the storage problem; unlocked studies may not survive a reload. Unfinished matches are not saved.
Is Ghost Word Game free with no ads?
Yes. Play free with no ads, account or download. The game has no timer, so you can take time to compare possible continuations.
