How to play Skitgubbe online

  1. Choose an escape study or a full three-player CPU game.
  2. In gathering, play any card against the next player and collect the pile if your rank is higher.
  3. After the last stock card reveals trump, lead, beat the top card or pick up that single card.
  4. Empty your hand to leave safely. In a study, do so within the displayed number of your own turns.

Controls

Tap a hand card, then use Play card to confirm. Previous card and Next card move through your whole hand, changing the eight-card page automatically. Pick top card and Blind chance act directly when available. Arrow keys focus, Enter selects, P or Space plays, T picks up, B takes a blind chance, H hints and U undoes. Board & cards pauses for inspection.

A tip before you start

Count the current trick's required cards before spending a trump. A player who leaves changes the next trick's size, but the current trick keeps its original target. Picking up removes only the top card and exposes the one below it.

One game, two different objectives

Skitgubbe uses a declared basic Swedish profile for three players. You, Birch and Rowan play clockwise with fifty-two cards, ranked from Two up to Ace. Each player begins with three cards. The first phase gathers cards through two-player duels; the second phase sheds those collected cards. The final player left holding cards loses. This is different from Durak's attack-and-defense bouts, despite the shared idea of escaping with an empty hand.

Gather with two-card duels

The leader and the next player each play one card; the third player waits. Suits do not matter, and there is no obligation to beat the lead. Each hand card is replaced immediately while the stock permits. The higher rank takes the whole pile and leads the next duel. Equal ranks bounce: the cards stay on the table and the same two players play again under the same leader. A decisive later duel awards the accumulated pile.

Take a chance, then reveal trump

When more than one stock card remains, Blind chance plays its unseen top card directly instead of a card from your hand. That draw cannot be taken back. The final stock card is kept aside face down by its drawer. Gathering continues without replacement cards until the current player has no card to play. Unresolved table cards return to the people who played them, including cards from earlier tied duels. Won piles become hands, the reserved card reveals the trump suit, and its owner keeps it and leads the shedding phase.

Beat the top card or pick up one

On an empty table, lead any card. Otherwise, beat the top card with a higher card of the same suit or with a trump over a non-trump. You may instead take only the top card into your hand, even when you could beat it. The next active player then faces the card underneath. If your pickup empties the table, the next active player leads a new trick. A lower card or an unrelated non-trump cannot simply be discarded onto the pile.

Keep the current trick size after an exit

A trick is discarded when its card count reaches the number of active players at its start. The last player to beat leads again if still holding cards; otherwise the next active player leads. Empty hands leave immediately and do not re-enter. If someone goes out during a three-card trick, that trick still needs three cards. Once it ends, the next trick needs two. Taking a card back reduces the pile but does not reset its original requirement.

Twenty original guaranteed escapes

Studies begin at legally reachable positions from complete shuffled deals and reveal every remaining hand. Your goal is to empty your hand within the stated number of your own actions; a pickup counts as one action and adds a card. Any remaining defenders cooperate to prevent the guarantee. Most studies focus on the final two-player duel after someone has already escaped; a three-player position also tests the extra reply. This is a conservative teaching objective, not a claim about normal selfish three-player optimal play.

A pickup can be part of the plan

The independently checked studies increase the minimum guaranteed turn budget from one to four and add more consequential choices. They are not just the same position with different suits. Study fourteen starts with two cards but needs four own turns against an adverse continuation, because a pickup cannot always be avoided. Every target-preserving first move is accepted. Two exact hints select a move for you to confirm. If the guarantee is lost, the exercise stops with Undo available; an ordinary match has not been declared lost.

Play a full game with hidden opposing hands

Full games keep opponents' cards, won-pile identities and the stock order hidden. The casual computers use their own cards and public information, without claiming expert strength. Your hand appears in pages of eight cards, and Board & cards lists it in full. This digital edition ends a shedding position repeated three times as a draw to prevent endless pickup loops. That loop limit is a clearly stated local rule, not a traditional Skitgubbe requirement.

Know the edition and keep your place

This edition follows the basic three-player, two-card gathering profile described by Pagat. Other Skitgubbe and Mattis versions use all-player gathering, sequences, sluffing, compulsory ties or redistributed low cards; those options are not used here. Undo restores your last action and every computer reply without refunding study hints. Restart repeats the deal after confirmation, while New deal changes it. Pause, Help, inspection and backgrounding suspend play. Legal histories, unlocks and sound resume when local storage works; loading and storage failures provide recovery notices.

Frequently asked questions

Can I play the Skitgubbe card game online for free?

Yes. Skitgubbe runs in your browser with no ads, download or account. Choose a complete game against two computers or twenty original escape studies.

What happens when gathering cards have equal ranks?

They bounce. The pile stays on the table, and the same leader and responder play another duel. A later unequal pair awards the accumulated pile.

Can I pick up even when I have a legal beat?

Yes. In the shedding phase, you may voluntarily pick up only the top card. The next active player must then deal with the card underneath, or lead if the table is empty.

Does a player leaving reduce the current trick's size?

No. The current trick keeps the number of cards required when it began. The smaller number of active players determines the next trick's size.

Why can a two-card study need four turns?

Your opponents may force a pickup, which consumes a turn and adds another card to shed. Study fourteen tests exactly that kind of continuation.

Do the study computers play like the full-game computers?

No. Studies reveal all remaining hands and use exact defending replies to test a bounded escape guarantee. Full-game computers use a casual policy with only their own cards and public information.

Is a repeated-position draw a standard rule?

No. Skitgubbe declares a draw after the same shedding position appears three times as a local safeguard against pickup loops. The ordinary objective is still to avoid being the last player holding cards.

Can I undo and resume a deal?

Yes. Undo restores your last action and all following replies. Used study hints remain spent. Valid game histories and study progress resume when browser storage is available.
