How to play Toepen online

  1. Choose a full CPU match or a study. Each full-match player receives four cards from a 32-card deck; the dealer's left leads.
  2. Before play, keep your hand or exchange all four cards. During each knock window, pass or raise the stake. Answer a rival's raise by staying or folding.
  3. Select a card and press Play. Follow suit if possible. Win the fourth trick to avoid the normal stake loss; reaching 10 lost lives ends the match.

Controls

Tap a card or use Previous, Next card and Select, then Play card. Arrow keys move focus, Enter or Space selects, P plays, H hints and U or Ctrl+Z undoes. Phase buttons handle exchanges, challenges, knock windows and stay/fold replies. Open Lives & rules for scores, public signals and the current deal's event log. Help, pause, sound and fullscreen are available.

A tip before you start

A high card is not automatically best played early. The first three tricks control who leads later, but only the fourth normally decides who pays the stake. Use the open studies to see how saving a ten or changing the lead affects the final trick.

The three-player Toepen rules profile

Each suit ranks J, Q, K, A, 7, 8, 9, 10 from low to high. The ten is highest and there is no trump. Players must follow the led suit when they can; otherwise they may play any card. The highest card of the led suit wins each trick, and its winner leads next. Toepen uses a sequential ten-life profile with one human and two computer players.

Exchange all four cards, with a possible challenge

Before card play, a hand containing only jacks, queens, kings and aces qualifies for a fresh hand. You may also exchange a stronger hand, but any rival may challenge the discarded cards. If they contain a 7,8,9 or 10, the discarder loses one life; otherwise the challenger loses one. The replacement hand is kept either way. Discards stay hidden unless challenged. Our digital sequence gives exchange opportunities clockwise from dealer left, repeats them until everyone passes consecutively, and stops when fewer than four cards remain. Only the first challenger resolves an exchange.

Knocking, staying and folding

The stake starts at one lost life. A knock raises it by one, and the other active players respond clockwise from the knocker's left. Stay to risk the new stake, or fold and immediately lose the old stake. The last knocker cannot knock again until another player does, and nobody can fold on their own raise. A player may knock only when their current lost lives plus the new stake are at most 10. Explicit windows give each active player a chance before the next card and before trick settlement, including after the final card.

When a folded card wins the last trick

Cards already played remain eligible to win their trick even if their owner folds. After an earlier trick, a folded winner passes the next lead clockwise to an active player. If that happens on the fourth trick, all remaining active players lose the current stake because none won that trick. The folded winner has already paid the fold cost and is not charged again. If everyone except the knocker folds, the remaining player wins immediately and deals next.

Lost lives, signals and the next deal

Normally, active players other than the fourth-trick winner lose the current stake, and that winner deals next. The match ends when a player reaches 10 lost lives; if multiple players reach the threshold in the same settlement, they share the loss in this version. The others survive. Holding three or four tens produces an automatic truthful signal when the hand is received. You may optionally signal three or four jacks while you hold them. The log records these as historical announcements, including hands later exchanged. No poverty rule, continuing elimination, money stakes or drinking requirement is used.

Twenty open-hand last-trick studies

Every study comes from a legal deal and shows all three hands. Its narrower task is to guarantee the last trick with a fixed one-life stake, no exchanges and no knocking. The rivals choose the worst legal card reply for you, so one lucky response does not count as a guarantee. Later studies increase meaningful decisions and planning depth. These visible-card exercises are separate from the hidden-hand CPU match and do not claim optimal bluff strategy.

Undo, hints and a fair computer opponent

The computer sees its own hand and public information, including played cards and truthful announcements; it does not inspect another hand, unseen stock or an unchallenged discard. Full-match hints use the same simple public-information policy. Study hints search the open position and are limited to two uses, which Undo does not refund. Undo restores your entire action and its computer responses with the same cards. Restart repeats the seed; New match changes it after confirmation.

Frequently asked questions

Is the ace higher than the ten?

No. In this profile the order is J, Q, K, A, 7, 8, 9, 10, so the ten is highest.

Can I fold without someone knocking?

No. Folding is a response to another player's raise. In an ordinary window, choose Pass or Knock.

Do I pay the new stake when I fold?

You pay the old stake immediately. For example, folding on the first raise from one to two loses one life.

Do these rules cover every Toepen variation?

No. This page declares its three-player, sequential ten-life profile. Limit variants, poverty rules and seven-point Schröömen profiles differ.

Can I play other people online?

This version provides two computer rivals and solo open-hand studies. It has no remote multiplayer or cash play.

What progress is saved?

Unlocked studies, best study results and sound preferences save on this device when storage is available. An unfinished match restarts after reloading.
