Ultimate Tic Tac Toe is an ultimate tic tac toe game played across nine small boards. Every move also chooses where the next player must play. Win three small boards in a line to claim the larger board. Play free online with original botanical ceramic pieces, no ads, account or download.
How to play Ultimate Tic Tac Toe online
- Choose 20 Tactics, Computer Match or Two Players. Tactics begin from a prepared position; a new full match starts with an empty board and X moves first.
- Select an allowed small board in the overview. Then place your X or O in an empty cell of the enlarged board.
- The position of your cell directs the next player to the small board in that same position. If that destination is already won or full, they may choose any open small board.
- Make three marks in a row, column or diagonal to own a small board. Own three small boards in a line to win the match.
Controls
Tap or click the overview to choose a permitted board; this only selects the board. Tap an empty cell in the enlarged view to place a piece. Keys 1–9 place in the enlarged board, numbered left to right and top to bottom. Left and Right cycle legal cells; Up and Down cycle allowed boards; Enter places. The nearby Board, Cell and Place buttons provide the same controls. U or Undo takes back a complete human/computer turn in solo modes, or one move in Two Players.
A tip before you start
Before taking an attractive small-board move, inspect the board it will send your opponent to. Winning a local line can be less useful if its destination gives away the deciding large-board line. Closed destination boards also matter because they grant a free choice of the next open board.
How to play ultimate tic tac toe
Treat the nine small boards as the nine cells of one larger tic tac toe board. A small-board winner owns that large cell. A tied, full small board belongs to neither side, and closed boards never accept more marks. Three owned large cells in a row, column or diagonal win the match. If every small board closes without that line, the match is a draw.
A directed-move example you can follow
Number boards and cells 1–9 from left to right, top to bottom. On an empty board, X may choose board 5 and place in cell 3. O must now play in board 3. If O chooses cell 8 there, X must play in board 8. If a later move points at a board that has already been won or filled, the next player instead chooses any remaining open board.
Play ultimate tic tac toe online in three ways
Computer Match starts a full match against a computer opponent with a limited search budget. Two Players lets two people take turns on the same phone or computer. The separate 20 Tactics mode gives you a prepared position and a side to play. The game has no remote matchmaking, and the computer is not presented as an unbeatable opponent.
Twenty tactics with increasing planning depth
Every prepared position can be reached through legal moves from an empty board. The first four tactics have a forced win in one move; later four-level tiers require three, five, seven and nine moves in the worst case, counting both sides. Within a tier, the number of legal first moves increases. A fixed exhaustive verification search also takes more work at every level. These measures guide the progression, although individual players may find particular patterns easier than others.
A full overview and a larger place to play
All nine small boards stay visible in the overview. The selected board is also enlarged so you can place a piece without aiming at a tiny overview cell on a phone. Highlighting and numbered board labels show the required destination. Selecting an unavailable board or occupied cell explains the problem without changing the position.
Undo, pause and saved tactics
Undo restores the position before your last solo turn, including the computer reply. In Two Players, it removes the previous single move. Only completing a tactic unlocks the next tactic; full matches have separate progression. Pause and Help block board input. Mode changes and restarting ask for confirmation. Unlocks, best scores and sound save locally when storage works; unfinished matches reset after reloading.
Frequently asked questions
Can I play anywhere on my first move?
In a new full match, X may choose any cell. In a prepared tactic, the earlier legal moves may already require a particular small board; follow the highlighted destination.
What happens when I send my opponent to a closed board?
They may choose any small board that is still open. This applies to boards already won by either side and boards filled in a tie.
Does a tied small board help either player win?
No. It closes without an owner and cannot count as X or O in a large-board winning line.
Why does tapping the overview not place a piece?
The overview chooses the board. Place your piece in the enlarged board, which gives each cell more room on small screens.
Can two friends play together?
Yes, choose Two Players and share the same device. This mode does not connect separate devices over the internet.
Does a computer match unlock tactics?
No. Complete the selected tactic to unlock its successor. Computer Match and Two Players leave the tactic ladder unchanged.
