How to play 101 and Out online

  1. Choose Vs computer, Two players or Study challenges. In a match, press Roll die to reveal the number both players will use.
  2. Choose ones or tens. A roll of 4 adds either 4 or 40. Your recorded choice stays locked during a match, and you must count every roll.
  3. Complete all six rows. The greater total at 100 or below wins; 101 or more is out. In a study, reach the displayed best possible total using the fully visible remaining dice.

Controls

Tap the on-board Ones, Tens and Roll buttons, or use the matching controls beside the sheet. O or 1 chooses ones, T chooses tens and R rolls. In studies, U or Ctrl+Z undoes a choice and H uses a hint. Sheet & rules opens the complete record; Help explains the game. Pause, sound, restart and full-screen controls remain available outside the board.

A tip before you start

Leave room for every remaining roll. Reaching 100 early does not finish a match: each later die still adds at least one. In an open study, look ahead before choosing the largest value that fits right now. Saving a smaller die for tens can leave a better final total.

Six rolls, one target

This version follows the six-roll, target-100 place-value activity described by Marilyn Burns and the NSW Department of Education. One ordinary six-sided die is shared by both players. Each face must be added as its value or ten times its value. The goal is the closest total to 100 without exceeding it, rather than reaching 101 or stopping early. Some classroom activities with similar names use other rules.

What ones and tens mean

If the die shows 3, choosing ones adds 3 and choosing tens adds 30. Your running total updates alongside the recorded choice. For example, a total of 64 becomes 69 after five ones, or 114 after five tens. The latter is out. You cannot subtract, skip the die, reroll it or move an earlier match entry to another column.

Play a full match against the computer or a friend

Both players receive the same observed number on each of the six rounds. In Vs computer, your choice is followed by the computer's recorded choice. Its decisions use its own current total, the observed face and the number of rolls remaining. It aims for the best expected final legal score, treating a bust as zero; it does not know future dice. Two players mode takes turns on one shared device and does not create an online room.

Winning, tying and going out

After all six choices, any total at or below 100 beats a total above 100. Of two legal totals, the higher wins. Equal legal totals are a tie. If both players exceed 100, both are out and there is no winner. Even after a bust, the remaining rows are completed so you can see the entire addition record.

Twenty studies that reward planning ahead

Studies show every remaining die in advance. Earlier rows, when present, are already filled by legal ones-or-tens choices. Finish the sheet at the best possible legal total shown as the goal; it may be less than 100. Every plan reaching that total is accepted. The sequence progresses from two remaining decisions to six, with more distinct consequential choices. Every study requires more care than repeatedly taking the largest immediate value that fits.

Undo and hints belong to the studies

A match keeps every recorded choice locked, as in the classroom game. Studies let you undo and explore a different plan. Each study provides two hints based on its visible remaining dice; Undo does not give spent hints back. If earlier choices make the goal unreachable, the hint explains that you need to undo or restart. The public future in a study is a learning tool, not a prediction of random dice.

Restarting and saved progress

Restart repeats the current study or match seed after confirmation. New game starts a fresh match, also after confirmation; mode changes and choosing another unlocked study ask first. Study unlocks, best results and sound preferences save in this browser when storage is available. An unfinished sheet starts again after a reload. A failed artwork load offers Retry without deleting progress.

Frequently asked questions

Is the target 100 or 101?

The target is 100. A final total of 101 or more is out in this six-roll version.

Can I stop as soon as I reach 100?

No. All six rolls count. Reaching 100 before the last roll leaves no room for the positive values still to come.

Can I change an earlier choice?

Recorded choices stay locked in full matches. The separate open-sequence studies allow Undo so you can compare plans.

Why can I see future dice in a study?

A study is an authored planning exercise with a known sequence. Normal matches reveal only the current die and previous rolls.

What happens when both players go over 100?

Both are out. A lower busted total does not win; start a new match to try again.

Does the computer see future dice?

No. It chooses using the current total, observed face and remaining roll count. It calculates expected legal score rather than looking ahead at the random seed.

Can two people play together?

Yes, in Two players mode on the same device. It does not provide remote multiplayer rooms.
