Every stone in a Hamle puzzle has one move to make. Send it exactly the distance printed on it, then check the whole garden: the final stones must stay separate and every empty cell must connect. Hamle offers 19 original puzzles, editable destinations and hints that explain a deduction or clearly label a complete search. Play free online with no ads or download.
How to play Hamle online
- Select a gold origin badge or choose a stone with the Previous and Next controls.
- Give it one endpoint exactly the printed distance up, down, left or right.
- Place every stone without overlapping endpoints or shared edges, allowing paths to cross.
- Keep all empty cells connected, then complete the puzzle to unlock the next level.
Controls
Select an origin stone or use the Previous stone and Next stone buttons. Tap a highlighted destination or choose a direction button to move exactly the printed distance. Bracket keys select stones; arrow keys set a direction, Delete or Backspace clears, C checks, H hints and U undoes. On the combined small-screen grid, tap a gold badge to select a stone and the lower part of a cell to place an endpoint.
A tip before you start
Check the corners before placing a stone. Two endpoints can touch diagonally, yet still cut a corner cell off from the empty garden. A placement that obeys the distance and touching rules may fail the connection rule.
One exact-distance move per stone
Each clue has a letter and a number. The letter keeps its identity clear; the number is its movement distance. A stone marked 3 must finish exactly three cells up, down, left or right from its fixed starting cell. It cannot turn, stop early, stay still or wrap around an edge. Choosing a new direction replaces its endpoint; it does not start a second move from the previous destination.
Paths can cross
Imagine all moves happening together. A path may cross another path, an origin marker or a final stone. Those crossings do not block movement. The restrictions apply to the endpoints: each stone needs its own cell, and two final stones cannot share an edge. Diagonal contact is allowed. This makes Hamle different from a sliding puzzle, where the current arrangement blocks the next move.
Keep all remaining cells connected
After every endpoint is assigned, all cells without a final stone must form one connected area. Travel between them through shared edges; diagonal contact alone does not join them. Original clue badges are just reminders and do not count as final stones. A clue's original cell becomes part of the empty area unless another stone finishes there.
Read the two layouts
On a wide screen, the left grid holds the fixed origins and the right grid holds your endpoints. On a narrow screen, a single larger grid shows both: gold badges at the top of cells are origins, while dark stones below them are endpoints. Matching letters identify the same stone. Highlighted cells show the selected stone's possible exact-distance destinations, including choices that may later conflict with other endpoints.
Learn across 19 original puzzles
The sequence grows from 4 by 4 grids with three stones to a 7 by 7 grid with fourteen. Each puzzle has one verified assignment, including which stone reaches which endpoint. Grid size, stone count and the number of initially possible destinations never decrease, while the number of alternatives that must be ruled out increases. Later boards ask you to coordinate more moves and preserve longer connections; individual difficulty can still vary.
Check, change and understand
An occupied endpoint is rejected without changing your work. Endpoints that touch by an edge remain editable, and Check marks the conflicting stones. Once all stones have endpoints, the game also checks the empty area. An incomplete board with no visible conflict is not a guarantee that a solution remains. Clear removes the selected endpoint, and Undo restores the previous edit, even after completing a puzzle.
Hints that respect your work
Hint first checks whether your current endpoints can be completed. It can explain an exact-distance move forced by the edge of the grid or by already placed stones. If those simple deductions run out, it may identify an endpoint through complete bounded search and says so. A search limit is reported as unknown; an impossible position asks you to Undo or Clear. You have three successful hints per puzzle, and Undo does not refund them.
Keep your progress
Completing a puzzle unlocks the next one. Unlocked levels, best scores and your sound preference save locally when storage is available. Unfinished endpoint choices restart after reloading. Restart and level changes ask for confirmation. Help opens separately from the board, and artwork loading can be retried. There is no timer or account.
Frequently asked questions
Can the movement paths cross in a Hamle puzzle?
Yes. Paths may cross, overlap and pass over origins or endpoints. Only the final arrangement determines touching and empty-area connectivity.
Can the stones touch diagonally?
Yes. Final stones may share a corner, but cannot share an edge or the same destination. You must also keep every remaining empty cell connected through shared edges.
Does an original clue block an empty cell?
No. The original badge stays visible as a reference. Only the final stone position blocks the empty area.
Is this Hamle Sudoku?
This is ordinary Hamle. It has exact-distance movement, separate endpoints and connected empty cells. It does not add Sudoku rows, columns or boxes.
Will a direction button move the stone one cell?
It assigns an endpoint the full printed distance from the original cell. You may revise that choice until the final arrangement satisfies every rule.
Can I play this Hamle puzzle free with no ads?
Yes. The nineteen original puzzles are free to play with no ads, account or download.
