Math Crossword is a math crossword game with one bank of digits and six crossing equations. Each shared number must work in its row and its column. This math crossword puzzle game offers twenty original challenges, from addition practice to mixed operations, with no timer, ads or download.
How to play Math Crossword online
- Select an unshaded number square, then choose an available digit. Use each digit from 1 to 9 exactly once across the whole grid; fixed clues already use their digits.
- Read rows from left to right and columns from top to bottom. Each complete expression must equal the printed result at its end.
- Multiply and divide before adding or subtracting. Operations at the same priority go left to right, and every division step must give an exact integer.
- Finish all six equations to unlock the next puzzle. Clear returns an editable digit to the bank, so you can move it to another square.
Controls
Click or tap a number square, then choose a bank digit. Arrow keys move focus; 1–9 place an available digit, while 0, Backspace or Delete clears it. C checks, H hints and U undoes. Operators, equal signs, results and shaded starting clues are fixed. Help, pause, sound, restart and full screen are separate controls.
A tip before you start
Solve a row with two given digits, then test the new value in its crossing column. Keep arithmetic priority in mind: 9 + 3 × 3 equals 18, not 36. If a needed digit is already elsewhere, clear its current editable square before placing it again.
How math crossword games connect their clues
Each of the nine number positions participates in both one horizontal and one vertical equation. There are no isolated rows to solve independently. The global bank contains one each of 1–9, so using a digit in one equation also removes it as an option elsewhere.
Twenty original puzzles with a wider rule set
Early puzzles use addition. Subtraction appears in Level 5, multiplication in Level 10, and exact division in Level 16. The number of editable squares never decreases, growing from three to nine. A fixed complete solver performs strictly more constraint checks per level, from 9 to 350; a separate bank-permutation checker verifies a unique solution for each grid. Measured solver effort does not guarantee how hard a person finds a puzzle.
Use standard operation order
Multiplication and division share the higher priority; addition and subtraction share the lower priority. Work left to right within each priority. For example, 8 ÷ 4 × 2 equals 4. Division is allowed only when that step has no remainder. Printed results may be zero or negative, but the playable bank still contains only digits 1–9.
Correct a misplaced digit without getting stuck
A wrong answer stays editable. Check highlights complete equations that do not match their results. Hint places one correct digit, moving it out of an incorrect square if necessary. Undo restores the entire edit or hint move, including after completion, while keeping the hint count.
A compact grid and local progress
All equations, result clues and required actions scale to the game window, with a portrait layout for phones. Opening Help, resizing, losing focus or cancelling a touch clears the unfinished selection. Unlocked levels, best scores and sound save locally when storage works; unfinished grids restart on reload.
Frequently asked questions
Must every digit appear once across the entire board?
Yes. The bank contains one each of digits 1–9. A fixed starting clue already consumes its digit. Clear an editable digit to return it to the bank before moving it.
Should I calculate every equation straight from left to right?
Only within the same priority. Multiplication and division happen before addition and subtraction. Equal-priority operations then go left to right.
Can a division step produce a fraction?
No. This game requires every division step to produce an integer with no remainder. Division by zero is never allowed.
Why is a printed result 0 or negative when those numbers are not in the bank?
The result is a fixed clue, not a square you fill. The six expressions can produce zero or a negative number using the bank digits and the supplied operations.
Is the math crossword online free to play?
Yes. All twenty levels are free, with no account, timer or download. Complete each level to unlock the next.
Does Hint use a digit twice?
No. If the required digit is in another incorrect square, Hint moves it to the correct position. One Undo reverses that entire move, and the hint remains counted.
