How to play Pope Joan online

  1. Choose an open study or start a complete three-deal computer match.
  2. Select your lowest card in a suit and confirm with Lead card.
  3. Follow the automatic sequence and inspect its stop and point claims in Run & pools.
  4. Empty your hand first in a study, or finish the normal match with the highest personal point total.

Controls

Tap or click a green-outlined card, then choose Lead card. Tapping the same card again or Cancel choice clears the selection. Previous card, Next card and Select card provide button controls. Left and Right change focus, Enter or Space selects, P plays, H suggests, G plays a suggestion and U undoes a study. The game follows compulsory cards automatically; Run & pools explains the latest sequence, its claims and the public played-card history.

A tip before you start

A low lead can hand control to a rival who owns the stop. In an open study, trace the entire sequence before choosing: who plays last, which suit can they start next, and whether somebody empties their hand along the way. The seven of diamonds is always a stop because the eight is absent.

The pack and the extra hand

Use a standard deck without the eight of diamonds. Each suit runs from low Ace through 2 to 10, Jack, Queen and King. Pope Joan seats you with Fern and Iris, two computer players. A deal also gives cards to an extra dead hand. Those cards stay hidden in ordinary matches and create unknown breaks in the sequences. The final dealt card is shown to establish the scoring suit, traditionally called trump, and stays with its recipient. This is a shedding game: trump does not beat another suit in a trick.

Low leads and compulsory follows

The player to the dealer's left begins with the lowest card they hold in any chosen suit. Whoever owns the exact next rank of that suit must play it, and the sequence continues automatically. It stops at a King, at the missing eight of diamonds, or when the next card is in the dead hand or has already been played. The player who placed the stop chooses the next lead, again using their lowest card in a suit. They may choose the same suit if they have a legal lead there.

Eight pools of game points

At the start of each deal, the dealer puts fifteen virtual points on the board: six on Pope, two on Matrimony, two on Intrigue and one each on Ace, King, Queen, Jack and Game. Playing the Ace, King, Queen or Jack of trump takes its named pool. Playing the nine of diamonds takes Pope. If the card turned up to establish trump is one of those scoring cards, its pool goes immediately to the dealer instead. An emptied pool pays nothing again until it is refilled.

Consecutive cards from one hand

Matrimony belongs to a player who plays the trump Queen and King consecutively. Intrigue belongs to a player who plays the trump Jack and Queen consecutively. All cards of a claimed pair must come from the same hand. A consecutive Jack–Queen–King sequence from one hand can claim both pools, as well as the individual honor pools that still contain points. Merely holding a pair does not collect it.

The first empty hand ends the deal

Play stops immediately when anyone uses their last card, after resolving any pool claim on that card. The winner takes Game, then receives one point for each card remaining in each opponent's hand. There is one unusual exception: an opponent still holding the nine of diamonds pays nothing for their entire hand. Unclaimed pools carry into the next deal. This version uses the ordinary Ace-low profile; it does not end a deal automatically when the nine of diamonds is turned up.

Three deals against two computer rivals

Normal matches start each player with sixty points and rotate the dealer for three deals, so every seat deals once. The highest personal point total wins, with ties shared. Points still in unclaimed pools are left there at the end. This is the site's session format. Computer choices and normal hints use only the player's own hand, publicly played cards, the turned-up card and visible counts. Opponent cards and the dead hand remain hidden. These are game points with no purchase, cash stake or withdrawal.

Twenty original open-table studies

Studies deliberately reveal all three hands and the dead hand. Their target is to empty your hand first within the displayed number of your lead choices, against any legal replies. Each position comes from an original full deal and a legal sequence of earlier plays. Your starting hand grows from two to ten cards, with up to thirty-five active cards across the table. The shortest guaranteed plans progress from two to seven decisions, and the number of meaningful alternatives increases. These exercises practice control of the stops; they do not promise the highest possible counter score.

Hints, Undo and saved progress

Study hints use exact open-table analysis and check that a guaranteed finish remains within your choice budget. A work limit is reported as unknown. You have three successful hints, and Undo does not refund them. Undo restores your previous whole lead and every computer run that followed it; ordinary matches have no Undo. Completing a study unlocks the next. Unlocked levels, best scores and sound preference save locally when storage is available. An unfinished deal starts again after reloading. Restart and mode changes require confirmation, and Help or Pause suspends computer play.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ace high or low in this Pope Joan card game?

Ace is low. A suit rises Ace, 2, 3 and onward to King. Only the lowest card you currently hold in a suit may begin a new run.

Why is the eight of diamonds missing?

Its absence makes the seven of diamonds a permanent stop. The nine of diamonds cannot be reached from the seven, so its holder needs an opportunity to lead it when it is their lowest diamond.

Why did a player with several cards pay nothing?

A player who still holds the nine of diamonds when someone else goes out is exempt from the entire remaining-card payment. It is not just a one-card discount.

Do the studies reveal hidden cards?

Yes. Studies are explicitly open-table exercises and reveal the rival hands and dead hand. Ordinary matches keep those cards hidden, and their computer opponents and hints cannot inspect them.

Can I play the Pope Joan card game with friends here?

This version has one human seat and two computer rivals. It does not provide online rooms or human multiplayer.

Is Pope Joan free with no ads?

Yes. The complete computer matches and twenty original studies are free to play with no ads, account or download.
