How to play Royal Game of Ur online

  1. Choose Full CPU match, Two players or a decision study.
  2. In a full race, roll to choose the starting player, then roll four binary dice afresh.
  3. Move one piece the entire rolled distance, using the numbered route to preview your landing.
  4. Capture on the shared lane, repeat after rosettes and bring all seven pieces home with exact rolls.

Controls

Tap a piece or its reserve, inspect the destination, then press Move piece. R rolls; arrow keys choose a piece, Enter selects and Space commits. H requests a study hint and P toggles route numbers. Board & odds opens a paused explanation of the visible position.

A tip before you start

A central rosette protects a piece and grants another throw, but staying safe is not always the quickest finish. Count the exact exit distance and consider how a capture delays the opponent.

A modern Finkel rules profile

This edition follows the modern Finkel profile described by RoyalUr.net: seven pieces per player, four binary tetrahedral dice, a fourteen-square route and an exact exit at step fifteen. It is a reconstruction for play, not a claim that every rule of the ancient game is known or that all modern editions agree. In a full match, both players make opening throws; the higher result starts, ties are rerolled, and the starting player then makes a fresh throw for the first move.

Read your private arms and the shared lane

The route begins on your four-square private arm, travels along all eight middle squares and turns onto your two-square far arm before leaving the board. Ivory and Teal have separate outer arms but share the middle lane. One piece uses the full roll. You may jump over occupied squares, but cannot finish on your own piece. An enemy on a shared square is returned to reserve when captured. The numbered path stays available while you learn.

Rosettes, protection and the exact exit

Landing on any rosette at your steps four, eight or fourteen gives another throw. Only the middle rosette at step eight protects its occupant from capture. Rolling zero, or having no legal move, passes the turn automatically; you cannot choose to pass when a move is legal. A piece at step fourteen needs exactly one to leave. The first player with all seven pieces home wins the full race.

Four dice do not mean a uniform result

Each tetrahedral die has two marked and two unmarked corners. The four binary results have sixteen equally likely combinations: totals zero and four each occur in one combination, one and three each in four, and two in six. These weights are visible in Board & odds and used by the study calculations. The four illustrated dice distinguish marked corners, while the total remains readable beside them.

Twenty original decisions with a stated horizon

Studies begin from original positions with complete legal construction histories and a fixed known current roll. Choose the move giving Ivory the highest probability of getting all seven pieces home within the stated number of future throws after that move. The count includes both players, repeat throws and zero. Future Ivory choices maximize that probability; Teal choices minimize it. Each of the twenty studies has one best move, checked with an independent probability model. The continuation graph grows strictly from seven to 15,797 states, and the horizon grows from two to seven future throws. These are decision exercises, not a rating assessment.

A best decision is not a guaranteed race win

Selecting the strongest study move completes that decision immediately. It does not mean a complete race was won, and even the best finite-horizon probability may be small. Board & odds reveals each exact fraction and percentage after your decision or a hint. Two hints are available per study and reduce its score. A different objective or a longer horizon can favor a different move. Use Full CPU match for an actual race from seven pieces in reserve.

Play a complete race with a computer or a friend

The computer considers progress, captures, protected squares and one weighted future throw. It cannot see future dice and does not claim perfect play. Two players shares the same rules on one device, with no online room. Restart repeats the starting seed; New race chooses a fresh seed after confirmation. Committed moves and dice throws have no undo. Pause, Help and Board & odds suspend the computer while you inspect the board.

Frequently asked questions

Can I play the Royal Game of Ur board game online for free?

Yes. Royal Game of Ur runs in the browser with no download, account or in-game ads. Choose a full computer race, same-device two-player mode or an original decision study.

Which rules does Royal Game of Ur use?

It uses the modern Finkel profile described by RoyalUr.net: seven pieces, four binary dice, a fourteen-square route, all rosettes granting another throw, a protected central rosette and exact rolls to exit. Other reconstructions may differ.

Can I capture a piece on a rosette?

The shared central rosette at step eight is protected. The other rosettes are on private arms, so the opponent cannot land there. An enemy on another shared square can be captured and returned to reserve.

What does completing a decision study mean?

You selected the move with the greatest exact probability of finishing within the study's stated future-throw limit under its maximizing Ivory and minimizing Teal model. This completes one decision exercise, not necessarily a full race, and does not guarantee a win.

Can I play with another person?

Yes, Two players lets Ivory and Teal take turns on the same device. There is no online multiplayer room. Full CPU match provides a computer opponent.

Can I undo a dice throw or continue later?

There is no undo for a committed move or dice throw. When local storage works, a validated history restores the current roll and board as well as your study progress. Restart and New race require confirmation.
