Play Backgammon Online
Backgammon offers free play against the computer on a complete 24-point board, with fifteen checkers each and ordinary random dice. Bring your white checkers home, bear them off, and try to finish before the computer. A separate set of twenty training puzzles lets you practice the rules with a fixed roll and a target layout.
How to play Backgammon online
- Choose Vs computer for a complete game. Both sides roll one die; ties are rolled again, and the higher roll starts using both numbers.
- Select a white checker, then a highlighted destination. White travels from point 24 toward point 1. Use both dice when possible; doubles give four moves.
- Enter checkers from the bar before moving any others. Once all your active checkers are in your home board, bear them off. The first side to remove all fifteen wins.
Controls
Tap a checker and then a highlighted destination, or use the Previous move, Next move and Play move buttons. Die changes the preferred die when two legal bear-off choices share a destination. Undo turn resets your unfinished turn or reverses your last completed turn and the computer reply. Recorded dice stay the same. Hint outlines one move; Play hint applies it.
A tip before you start
A point with two or more checkers is protected. Before leaving a single checker exposed, compare the gain in distance with the risk of being sent back to the bar. When bearing off, check the farthest occupied point before using a die larger than the exact distance.
Play backgammon online: no download needed
Open the game in your browser and choose Vs computer. This is free online backgammon with no download, no account and no ads. You play one game without a doubling cube or wagers; the finish is identified as a single, gammon or backgammon.
The whole roll matters
A checker cannot land on two or more opposing checkers. Landing on one hits it to the bar. You must use as many dice as legally possible, even when that requires a different order. If either die can be played individually but both cannot be used, play the higher die. If only one die is legal, use that die. An oversized bear-off die can remove only a checker on your farthest occupied home point.
Twenty fixed-roll training puzzles
Challenges begin from prepared legal positions that account for all fifteen checkers on each side, including those already borne off. Use the shown dice to match the target board, bars and off counts. Each later challenge offers more distinct legal final layouts, from two in the first to 636 in the last. Reordering independent moves does not count as a different layout. These are single-turn exercises, not full matches or random-dice games.
Random dice and undo
In full games, dice rolls are independent and are not adjusted to help either side. Undo preserves the recorded rolls, including the computer reply, so retrying a turn gives you the same dice. The computer uses a limited evaluation of legal turns; its choices are practice suggestions, not guaranteed perfect play.
Frequently asked questions
Can I play against the computer for free?
Yes. Backgammon provides free play against the computer and twenty free training challenges. You can start immediately in the browser.
Do training wins unlock anything in the full game?
Completing a challenge unlocks the next challenge. Full matches and training progress are separate; winning a full match does not skip training levels.
What if neither die has a legal move?
Choose Pass roll. You cannot pass while a legal move remains. If the computer is blocked, it passes automatically.
What happens when I reload?
Unlocked challenges, best challenge scores and sound settings stay saved when browser storage is available. The current match or unfinished turn is not saved. Reloading opens challenge one, and you can select any unlocked challenge.
Can I play on a phone?
The board rearranges for a portrait game window, while mouse, touch and move-selection buttons all use the same rules. Help opens separately, and Full screen is available where the browser supports it.
