How to play International Checkers online
- Choose Challenges for a teaching position, Vs computer for a full game as White, or Two players for local turn-taking. A full game starts with twenty men each; White moves first from the lower four rows.
- A man moves one diagonal square forward. It captures forward or backward by jumping a neighboring opponent onto the empty square immediately beyond it. A crowned king moves along any clear diagonal and can land farther beyond a captured piece.
- If any capture is available, you must choose a complete sequence taking the greatest possible number of pieces. Follow each highlighted landing with the same piece. Equal maximum routes remain your choice; a king has no special priority.
- Win by leaving your opponent with no piece or no legal move. In Challenges, White must force that result within the displayed number of White turns. Winning a full game does not unlock teaching levels.
Controls
Click or tap a piece and each highlighted destination, or drag to the first landing of a move. Previous square, Next square and Choose square provide button control; Left/Right arrows inspect, Enter or Space chooses, H hints, P plays a whole hinted turn, U undoes and Escape cancels. A partial capture stays a preview until its last required landing. Help, losing focus or a cancelled touch clears unfinished input.
A tip before you start
Count the complete capture, not just the first jump. A tempting king capture can be illegal when another piece can capture more. During a flying-king sequence, the pieces already crossed still block diagonals until the turn ends, so choosing a farther landing can change which continuation is available.
Flying kings and delayed promotion
A king can travel over several empty diagonal squares and choose an empty landing beyond one enemy. A man keeps its usual short capture steps throughout a sequence, even when an intermediate landing touches the far row. It becomes a king only if the final landing finishes there. Gold crowns identify kings on both light and dark pieces.
What maximum capture means
The rule compares the number of captured pieces across every available complete route on the board. Men and kings each count as one captured piece. Captured pieces remain on their squares as obstacles during the route; you cannot cross one twice, although you may revisit an empty square. The interface marks a preview’s crossed pieces while keeping them visible until the turn is committed.
Twenty tactics reached through legal play
Every challenge includes a recorded route from the standard forty-piece opening. The winning plan is checked against every legal reply. The minimum plan grows from one to four White turns, and a fixed proof search visits strictly more states at every challenge. These are measured planning demands; individual puzzles may feel easier or harder depending on the patterns you recognize.
Automatic draw rules
The game draws on the third occurrence of the same position with the same player to move, or after each player makes twenty-five consecutive king moves without a capture or a man moving. Three pieces including a king against one king trigger a sixteen-move allowance for each player, which a capture does not reset. One or two pieces including a king against one king trigger a five-move allowance each. A no-piece or no-legal-move loss takes precedence at the final permitted move.
Full games, hints and Undo
The full-game computer uses a limited search and can make mistakes. Challenge hints check for a forced win within the remaining turn allowance; a search cutoff is reported honestly. Undo restores the complete turn, any computer reply and the draw counters. A partial chain can be cancelled before it changes the position. Hint use is not refunded by Undo.
A complete board inside the window
All one hundred squares, fifty playable square numbers and required controls stay within the game area in portrait or landscape. The board uses original illustrated wood pieces and a garden tabletop. Unlocked challenges, best scores and sound save in this browser when storage is available; unfinished matches restart on reload. Restart and mode changes ask for confirmation.
Frequently asked questions
How is this different from 8×8 English checkers?
International draughts uses a 10×10 board, twenty men each, backward captures by men, flying kings and a greatest-number capture rule. Checkers remains available separately with its own 8×8 rules.
Can I stop halfway through a jump chain?
No. Every required jump belongs to one turn. You can cancel an unfinished preview, but cannot commit only its first part.
Does touching the promotion row make a man a flying king immediately?
No. Promotion is decided at the final landing. A man that touches the row and then leaves it during the same capture remains a man.
Why can’t I jump back over a piece I already captured?
Captured pieces stay as obstacles until the entire turn ends. The same enemy piece cannot be crossed twice during that turn.
Can two people play on separate devices?
Two players mode shares one device. This version does not provide remote multiplayer rooms.
Does this use a tournament clock or touch-move penalties?
No. It is an untimed practice game with selection previews, cancellation and Undo. The board movement, capture and automatic draw rules follow the international variant.
