A six wants a one, and a blank can stop an entire end of the train. Play the Matador domino game at a sunlit garden table, choosing when to spend a flexible matador and which number to leave exposed. Matador includes a two-player CPU match to one hundred points and twenty original open-hand studies. Play free online with no ads, download or account.
How to play Matador online
- Choose a seven-end study or a full two-player CPU match.
- Join ordinary tiles so the touching ends total seven.
- Use a matador to change an end freely, or retain it under the declared draw and pass rules.
- Win the hand by having fewer remaining pips and collect the difference.
Controls
Tap a hand tile or use Previous tile and Next tile. Select the left or right end, use Flip tile to choose its outer value, then Place tile to confirm. Draw one and Pass appear when allowed. Arrow keys focus and select, Enter selects, P/Space places, E changes the end, F flips, D draws, T passes, H hints, U undoes and C deals next. Tap a train tile or open Board & tiles to inspect it.
A tip before you start
Do not treat a matador as an ordinary matching tile. Its orientation controls the next required inward value. Leaving zero can block that end until someone spends another matador.
A different way to connect dominoes
Matador uses all twenty-eight double-six dominoes. You and the computer receive seven each; fourteen start in the stock. Ordinary contact ends must total seven rather than match: six joins one, five joins two, and four joins three. Doubles lie inline and have two ends, without spinner branches. Any tile can open, and the first leader alternates between deals.
Four matadors can change an end
The 0–0, 1–6, 2–5 and 3–4 tiles are matadors. Each can join any exposed end without satisfying the contact sum, and you choose which end faces outward. A 2–5 matador can leave either two or five available. The next ordinary tile must make seven with that exposed value. When zero is exposed, only another matador can extend that end.
Keep a matador when the rules allow it
If an ordinary tile can play, you must make a legal placement, though you can choose to play a matador instead. When only matadors fit, or nothing fits, you may draw one tile and keep the turn. Continue until an ordinary tile fits or the stock reaches two tiles; at any point you may play a matador instead. This makes retaining a flexible tile a real choice, not a mistaken illegal pass.
Two stock tiles stay out of play
This edition uses the documented draw rule that leaves the final two stock tiles reserved. They are never drawn and do not count in either player’s score. Once only those two remain, Pass is allowed if no ordinary tile fits, including when you choose to retain a playable matador. Two consecutive passes end the hand as blocked. You cannot pass while holding an ordinary legal placement.
Score the difference, then race to one hundred
A hand ends when someone empties their hand or both players pass consecutively. Add the pips left in each hand. The lower total wins and earns the difference between the two totals. Equal totals award no points, including the rare case of an empty hand opposite only a zero-pip tile. Match points accumulate until someone reaches at least one hundred. The ledger records every hand’s ending, remaining pips and award.
Twenty original endgame studies
Each study begins after a legal sequence from a full shuffled twenty-eight-tile deal, with the two reserved stock tiles remaining. Both hands are revealed. Your goal is to guarantee a winning margin of at least the displayed number of pips against every computer reply. The reserved tiles’ identities cannot affect the result because they cannot be drawn. This target is a single-hand teaching objective, not an entire match victory.
Study choices that alter the result
Later positions hold more remaining tiles and contain more outcome-changing choices. Every first option’s exact pip margin and the full history leading to each position were checked independently. Any target-preserving choice is accepted. Two hints show a tile, end and orientation, or recommend passing when that preserves the target. You confirm the move yourself. At the end, compare your actual margin with the goal and use Undo to revisit your previous decision.
Read the complete train
The board shows the entire train in numbered reading order: left to right, then the next row. A row break is only a display break and creates no new branch. Only the left edge of tile one and the right edge of the final tile are open. Tap a train tile to inspect its orientation, or use Board & tiles for the full ordered list. Your hand automatically pages in groups of eight so a long draw sequence remains usable.
One clear rules profile and a resumable match
This two-player edition uses inline matadors, optional retention when no ordinary tile fits, a two-tile stock reserve and pip-difference scoring. It does not use crosswise matadors, free passing while ordinary tiles fit, double-nine sets or the four-arm Leyden layout. Normal CPU play uses only its own hand and public information, with a casual policy. Undo restores your last action and all subsequent replies, draws, scoring and deal changes without refunding hints. Pause, Help, inspection and backgrounding suspend play. Validated browser saves resume the same position when storage works; loading, storage and computer errors provide recovery notices.
Frequently asked questions
Can I play the Matador domino game online for free?
Yes. Matador is a browser game with no ads, download or account. Play a CPU match to one hundred points or twenty original open-hand studies.
Do touching ends match or total seven?
Ordinary touching ends must total seven. Matadors are the exception: 0–0, 1–6, 2–5 and 3–4 can join any exposed end.
Which end of a matador stays open?
You choose its orientation before placing it. The outward number becomes the new exposed end and controls the next ordinary tile’s required inward number.
Can I keep a playable matador?
Yes, when no ordinary tile fits. You may draw while more than two stock tiles remain, or pass once only the reserved two remain. An ordinary legal placement prevents drawing or passing.
How does a blocked hand score?
After two consecutive passes, compare the pips remaining in the hands. The lower total earns the difference. Equal totals score nothing; the reserved stock is excluded.
Are these the same rules as Draw Dominoes?
No. Draw Dominoes matches equal ends and has different stock and scoring rules. Matador joins complementary ends that total seven and introduces four flexible tiles.
Does the computer see my hand?
Full-match computers use their own tiles and public information only. Studies deliberately reveal both hands and use exact analysis to test the displayed margin.
Can I undo and continue later?
Yes. Undo restores your last action and its replies, including draws and score changes. Hints remain spent. The same browser resumes validated progress when local storage is available.
