How to play Garden German Whist online

  1. Choose Study Challenges, Full CPU Hand or Guided Opening. A full hand deals 13 cards each and leaves 26 in the stock; the first upcard fixes trump.
  2. Select a card and press Play. Follow the led suit whenever you hold it. With no card of that suit, you may play any card.
  3. For the first 13 tricks, the winner receives the visible upcard and the loser draws the next unseen card. The winner leads next. Trump does not change.
  4. When the stock empties, play 13 more tricks without drawing. Only these final tricks count: at least seven wins the full hand.

Controls

Click or tap to select a card, then press Play. The selected card is enlarged. Arrow keys move focus; Enter or Space selects, P plays, U or Ctrl+Z undoes, H previews a hint and Escape clears selection. Score explains the two phases. Help opens separately from the board.

A tip before you start

During the first stage, consider whether the upcard is worth the card you would spend to win it. Saving a high trump can be more useful than taking a low upcard. In a study, inspect both hands and plan who will lead after the next trick.

German Whist card game rules

Garden German Whist uses a standard 52-card deck, Ace high, and the main two-player profile. You lead first as non-dealer; the computer deals. Each player must follow suit in both stages whenever possible. The higher card of the led suit wins unless the responding player, unable to follow, plays a trump. The trick winner leads the next trick.

The first 13 tricks build your hand

A complete deal begins with 13 cards each and 26 in the stock. Turn up only the top stock card. After each first-stage trick, the winner takes that visible card and the loser draws the next unseen card. Both players again have 13 cards. Reveal the new top card, but keep the original trump suit. First-stage trick counts are shown for explanation and score no points.

Only the last 13 decide this hand

Once the stock is empty, stop drawing and play the remaining hands. Seven or more of these 13 tricks wins. This version plays a single full hand; it does not add march bonuses or cumulative match points. It also does not use the alternative rule that permits ignoring the led suit during the first stage.

A worked follow-suit example

Suppose hearts are trump and the lead is the queen of clubs. If you hold any clubs, you must play a club. The ace of clubs beats the queen; the ten of clubs loses. If you have no clubs, any heart wins by trumping, while a spade or diamond loses regardless of its rank. The next stock upcard never changes the hearts trump suit.

20 public endgame studies

Study Challenges start in legally reachable positions with an empty stock and both hands visible. Win the stated number of remaining tricks against the computer's best legal replies. Previously scored tricks remain visible, but a study target is additional tricks, not necessarily a full-hand victory. All legal target-reaching alternatives are accepted. Later lessons increase necessary planning depth and the number of competing decisions, rather than simply shuffling the same puzzle.

Guided opening and fair computer play

Guided Opening uses a fixed demonstration deal and explains the actual upcard reward, unseen draw and scoring transition as you play. Complete hands use a shuffled 52-card deck. The computer and normal-hand suggestions receive only their own hand and public information; they do not inspect concealed cards or the future stock. Their simple heuristic is not advertised as perfect play. Complete hands and guided play do not unlock study lessons.

Hints, Undo and local progress

A study hint previews an exact continuation within its search budget; it does not play automatically. If the position is no longer guaranteed to meet its target, the message says so. A search cutoff means unknown and permits Retry or Undo. Study hints have limited allowances that Undo does not restore. Undo reverses your complete play and the computer response or next lead, preserving the same draw order. Restart repeats the current deal; New Deal creates a fresh hand after confirmation. Only study unlocks, best scores and sound preferences save locally. Unfinished hands restart after reload.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as four-player Whist?

No. German Whist is a two-player game with a stock-building stage followed by a scoring stage. This game has no partners or four-player table.

Must I follow suit while cards remain in the stock?

Yes. This implementation requires following suit in both stages. A separate first-stage free-play variant exists, but it is not the profile used here.

Does the trump suit change with each upcard?

No. The first visible stock card fixes trump for the whole hand. Later upcards are rewards, not new trump declarations.

Do the first tricks count toward winning?

No. The first 13 tricks allocate stock cards. Only the final 13 decide the full hand winner.

Can I play with another person online?

This version has a computer opponent and solo public-hand studies. It has no remote multiplayer or account system.

Are the studies complete deals?

They are prepared endgames reached through legal full-deck histories. Both remaining hands are deliberately visible and the stock is empty. Use Full CPU Hand to play all 26 tricks.

What happens if I choose the wrong suit?

The choice is explained and Play does not change the hand. Select a card of the led suit if you hold one.
