How to play Garden Clabber online

  1. Choose Full 500-point Match for a complete game with three CPUs, or Open Team Endgames to practice a visible position. In studies you control both allied hands; in a full match you control only your own seat.
  2. In a full match, accept the exposed suit or pass in the first bidding round. If everyone passes, name a different suit you hold or pass again. Eight passes move the deal clockwise without scoring.
  3. Follow the led suit. If you cannot, play a trump if possible; beat the highest trump already in the trick whenever you can, even when your partner is winning.
  4. In a study, preserve the displayed final team-score advantage and finish the six-trick deal. A study win unlocks the next level. In a full match, use Continue deal between hands until a team reaches 500.

Controls

Tap an active allied card to inspect it, then choose Play card. Arrow keys change selection; Enter or Space plays. H previews a hint, U or Ctrl+Z undoes, B passes bidding and C continues a finished deal. A drag away cancels a tap. The Melds button shows only announcements and cards already revealed by the selected rule profile. Full-match opponent backs cannot be inspected.

A tip before you start

Keep the two card orders separate: trump Jack and Nine outrank the Ace, while an ordinary suit ranks Ace, Ten, King, Queen, Jack, Nine. In a team endgame, check whether spending a high trump forces your partner to overtrump it later.

Which Clabber rules are used?

This is four-player Evansville Clabber with fixed opposite partners and 24 cards, Nine through Ace. Deal and play run clockwise. Teams are pre-seated, and East deals first. The makers must score strictly more than the other team in that deal. If they tie or finish behind, the makers score zero while the defenders keep their actual points. The higher cumulative score wins when at least one team reaches 500; equal totals draw. This page does not substitute Klabberjass, Debertz or an abstract Clobber board game.

Trump, trick points and the final ten

Trump order is Jack, Nine, Ace, Ten, King, Queen, worth 20, 14, 11, 10, 4 and 3 points. Other suits rank Ace, Ten, King, Queen, Jack, Nine, worth 11, 10, 4, 3, 2 and 0. The last trick adds ten points, making 162 trick points before melds and Bell. You must follow suit, trump when void and overtrump when possible. Following a non-trump suit does not require playing a higher card.

Assisted declarations and Bell

The game automatically chooses each hand’s highest-priority nonoverlapping meld collection and announces it on that seat’s first play. The team with the highest meld shows its declared combinations on each seat’s second-trick play and scores them. Four Jacks outrank four Nines, Aces, Tens, Kings and Queens, followed by five-, four- and three-card sequences. Equal highest non-trump sequences cancel both teams’ ordinary melds. Bell, the King and Queen of trumps, scores 20 independently when the second card is played or legitimately shown. A six-card 300-point sequence is not used.

Twenty endgames with more decisions

Every open study comes from a legally played full deal and retains all 24 card identities. You play both allied hands against exact strongest replies, aiming for the displayed final team-score margin. Later studies leave more cards and have progressively more distinct decision states and meaningful choices. These exercises teach late-hand play; they do not replace the bidding and declaration phases of a full match.

Undo, hints and a lost target

Undo restores your complete action and every following CPU reply. Study hints preview a card that preserves the verified team target; Play hint applies it. Spent hints remain spent after Undo. If a choice loses the guaranteed target, the study stops and lets you Undo or restart. This does not claim that a normal hidden-hand match is already lost. Full-match hints use public information and do not promise victory.

A complete local CPU match

Full Match deals every card, offers both bidding rounds, handles six tricks, scores declarations and Bell, and carries the team totals to 500. The three CPUs receive their own cards and legitimate public information, with no access to partner or opponent hands. They use a modest decision policy. This release is solo play on your device, with no remote multiplayer.

Progress, restarts and screen controls

Only study victories unlock levels. The browser saves unlocked studies, best scores and sound preference; the current match is not resumed after a reload. Restart repeats the same start after confirmation, while New deal starts a different full match. Help and Pause block play. Full screen is optional, and a loading failure offers Retry without deleting progress.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the Indiana Clabber card game?

Yes. It uses the four-player, 24-card Evansville profile, including compulsory overtrumping, the default meld order, Bell and maker-zero scoring. Declarations are assisted automatically and explained in the game.

Why must I beat my partner’s trump?

This Clabber rule requires you to overtrump whenever you can. Partnership does not waive the obligation, although you must still follow a led non-trump suit if you have it.

Do I control my partner?

In the open endgame studies you control both allied hands and see all four hands. In a normal full match your partner is a CPU and the other hands remain hidden.

What happens if all players pass twice?

That deal scores nothing. Continue deal rotates the dealer clockwise and starts the next hand with the same match totals.

Does being set give the opponents 162 points?

No. The trump-making team scores zero if it does not finish strictly ahead. The defenders keep the points they actually earned from tricks, melds and Bell.

Can I play with friends online?

This version is a local solo game with CPU seats. It does not provide remote multiplayer or a shared human partnership.
