Garden Monte Carlo is a Monte Carlo solitaire game about finding matching neighbors and planning how the board will change. Clear pairs with the same rank from a five-by-five grid, then bring the remaining cards together with Refill. Play free online with no ads or download, starting with a short challenge or a full 52-card deal.
Choose 20 Challenges for a growing sequence of prepared deals, or Full Deal for a shuffled standard deck of 52 cards with no jokers.
Select two cards with the same rank that touch horizontally, vertically or diagonally. Their suits can differ. A valid pair leaves two empty spaces.
Use Refill when you want to close the gaps. Remaining cards keep their reading order, moving left to right and top to bottom; cards from the stock then fill the available spaces in order.
Remove every card from the board and stock to finish. If your choices leave you stuck, use Undo to revisit a pair or take back an entire refill.
Controls
Click or tap one card and then its matching neighbor. Arrow keys move the card focus; Enter or Space selects. R activates Refill, U undoes an action, H requests a hint, and Esc clears the selection. Previous, Next and Select buttons also let you navigate and choose cards. Refill, Undo and Hint have visible buttons alongside the board.
A tip before you start
Before refilling, read the remaining cards from left to right and top to bottom. Closing a gap can bring matching ranks together, but it can also separate a pair that is currently available. Compare taking that pair now with changing the layout first; Undo lets you revisit the choice.
How to play Monte Carlo card game
The aim is to clear pairs until no cards remain. Each pair needs the same rank and direct contact along an edge or a corner: two queens may match even when their suits differ. Cards separated by a gap do not touch. There is no stacking, suit-building or sequence-building in this version.
Corners count, but row ends do not wrap
A card in row two, column two can pair with an equal-rank card in row three, column three because their corners meet. A card in row one, column five cannot pair with one in row two, column one: consecutive positions in reading order are not necessarily neighboring positions on the board.
Refill whenever it changes the board
This version lets you refill while a matching pair is still available. Refill first closes gaps without rearranging the order of the remaining cards, then deals from the stock into the open positions until the grid holds 25 cards or the stock runs out. An empty stock still allows you to close gaps. Refill does nothing when neither the layout nor the stock would change.
Twenty challenges with more pairs to clear
The first challenge uses 14 cards and requires seven pair removals. Each following challenge adds two cards and one required pair, reaching 52 cards and 26 pairs in challenge 20. Later deals also introduce a stock beyond the first 25 cards. This increases the amount of play; individual layouts can still feel easier or harder depending on which patterns you notice.
A complete deck in Full Deal
Full Deal starts with 25 face-up cards and 27 in the stock. Its random deals are not guaranteed to be solvable. It is separate from the challenge ladder, so completing a full deal does not unlock a challenge. The smaller early challenges are teaching deals, rather than shortened versions of the standard full-deck rules.
Undo, restart and local progress
Undo takes back one pair removal or one complete refill, restoring the stock as well as the grid. Restarting asks for confirmation. When local storage is available, challenge unlocks, best scores and your sound setting are saved on this device. The current deal and its Undo history are not saved, so reloading starts a fresh session.
Monte Carlo card games and neighboring pairs
This version uses the classic solitaire rules: match equal ranks that touch horizontally, vertically or diagonally. After removing pairs, Refill closes the gaps from left to right and deals from the remaining stock. Three-card Monte uses different rules and is not played here.
Frequently asked questions
Do matching cards need the same suit?
No. They need the same rank and must be direct neighbors. Two aces of different suits can match if they touch along an edge or corner.
Must I remove every available pair before refilling?
No. Garden Monte Carlo uses the version that allows you to refill at any time when doing so changes the board or adds stock cards. Other versions can use a different refill rule.
What can I do after the stock is empty?
You can still use Refill to bring the remaining cards together. Continue matching adjacent equal ranks. If the compacted board offers no pair, use Undo or restart.
Is every random Monte Carlo deal winnable?
No. Full Deal can produce an unwinnable layout, and earlier pair choices can also lead to a dead end. Hints use a known route or a limited search. Reaching that search limit does not prove that the position is impossible, and a hint is not a promise that every random deal can be cleared.
Does Undo restore cards dealt by Refill?
Yes. Undo restores the entire position before that refill, including the previous gaps and the stock order.
Will my unfinished deal return after reloading?
No. Local saving keeps challenge unlocks, best scores and the sound setting when storage is available. It does not keep the current board, stock or Undo history.
