How to play Garden Mancala online

  1. Choose a nonempty pit on your row. Player 1 owns the lower row and right-hand store; Player 2 owns the upper row and left-hand store.
  2. Sow the seeds counterclockwise, including your own store and skipping the other player's store. The game distributes them automatically.
  3. Use extra turns and captures to collect seeds. When one row is empty, the remaining seeds are swept into their owner's store and the larger total wins.

Controls

Tap or click one of your pits, or use its Pit button. The buttons refer to the active player's row: Player 1's pits run left to right, while Player 2's run right to left. Hint pit marks a suggested choice without playing it. Undo turn restores your last sowing and any following computer turns; in Two players it reverses the previous single move. Mode changes and Restart ask for confirmation before replacing the board.

A tip before you start

Count where the last seed will land before choosing a pit. A store finish can keep the turn, and a finish in an empty pit on your own row can collect the seeds directly opposite. Near the end, also count the seeds the other side would receive if your move empties a row.

Two players on one device

In Two players mode, pass the mouse or device between turns. Player 1 begins at the lower row; Player 2 uses the upper row. The status and pit buttons identify whose turn it is. This is local shared-board play, with no remote room or network opponent.

All three modes are free with no ads and no download. Vs computer uses the same full forty-eight-seed setup as Two players. Its computer player uses a limited search and can be beaten. Full matches have their own results and do not unlock challenge levels.

The Kalah capture and extra-turn rules

If your last seed lands in your store, move again unless the game has ended. If it lands in an empty pit on your own row and the pit directly opposite contains seeds, collect that final seed and all the opposite seeds into your store. An empty opposite pit gives no capture. Landing in an opponent's pit does not capture.

Twenty proved endgame challenges

Each challenge begins at a position reachable through legal play from the full forty-eight-seed setup. You play Player 1 and must finish at least the displayed number of seeds ahead. Every target has been checked against all legal opposing replies, and the computer uses exact replies in this mode. The challenges are ordered by increasing work under a fixed proof search; individual players may find their difficulty different.

Finish the game with the remaining seeds

As soon as either player's six pits are empty after a move, play ends. All seeds left on the other row go into that player's store. Compare the final totals: more seeds wins, and twenty-four each is a draw. An extra-turn landing does not postpone this final sweep.

Frequently asked questions

Can two people play from different devices?

The Two players mode is for two people sharing one device. It does not create an online room or connect separate devices.

Do I capture when the opposite pit is empty?

No. In this Kalah version, a capture requires your last seed to land in your own empty pit with seeds in the pit directly opposite. If the opposite pit is empty, the last seed stays where it landed.

Is the computer perfect?

In full matches, the computer uses bounded search and is beatable. Challenge mode is different: its selected endgames have complete proofs, and its computer replies follow exact endgame values.

What if I lose the challenge target?

Undo a turn or restart to try another line. A solvable starting position can become unable to reach its target after a wrong choice. A hint explains when the target is no longer forced; a search-limit message does not claim the position is impossible.

What progress is saved?

Unlocked challenges, their best scores and your sound setting save in this browser when local storage is available. An unfinished game resets to challenge mode after a reload. Confirming a restart or mode change keeps your unlocked challenges.

Can I play on a phone or computer?

Use touch, a mouse or the pit buttons. The board, stores, totals and necessary controls share one game window. Help opens separately, and full screen is available where your browser supports it.
